Snoring

THERE ARE DIFFERENT REASONS WHY WE SNORE

Most often snoring occurs when the muscles of the airway relax too much during sleep and vibrate when our breath passes in and out. It is quite common for people to snore from time to time, but chronic snoring can imply a larger issue. If severe it can also be a warning sign for obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that causes people to intermittently struggle or stop breathing during the night.

What are the common causes of snoring?

When searching for a snoring cure, it’s also helpful to know some of its causes. It can be a result of many things. It can be attributed to:

  • Throat muscle weakness, causing the throat to close during sleep
  • Misaligned jaw, often caused by tension in the muscles
  • Fat gathering in and around the throat
  • Obstruction in the nasal passageway
  • Tissues at the top of airways touching each other, causing vibrations
  • Consumption of alcohol or drugs
  • Sleeping on your back
  • Nasal and sinus problems
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Swollen adenoids or tonsils, especially in children
  • Medications, including sleeping tablets
  • Ageing, as your throat becomes narrower and the muscle tone decreases
  • Shape of your head and neck, as it may create a smaller than normal airway

SNORING TREATMENT OPTIONS

If you’re looking for a cure for snoring, there is a wide range of options for you. The use of CPAP masks in combination with CPAP machines is currently the most effective snoring treatment. CPAP involves the use of a continuous flow of pressurised air (via a mask) to an individual’s airway. This pressurised air prevents the airway from collapsing, which in turn acts as a snoring cure. Another snoring solution is the use of a Dental Plate which is placed in the mouth during sleep, causing the lower jaw and tongue to be held more forward than usual. This in turn opens the airway, resulting in a cure for snoring. ResSleep offers all of these options.
